Tsukishima: A Fusion of New and Old Cityscapes

Tsukishima, known as part of Tokyo’s “Shitamachi,” is also one of the components of the Tokyo Bay area, joining districts such as Kachidoki and Toyosu. One of the benefits of Tsukishima is convenient transportation. From Tsukishima Station, strap-hangers can access two subway lines, the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line and the Toei Subway Oedo Line. The Yurakucho Line puts Ginza Itchome Station within 4 minutes’ reach; a transfer to the Yamanote Line brings residents to Tokyo Station in just 18 minutes total.

Tsukishima is well known for its Tsukishima Nishinaka-dori Shopping Street, more commonly called Monja Street. Around 80 shops in this retail district serve monjayaki, a runnier cousin to okonomiyaki. The charm of Monja Street is its bustling commercial atmosphere. Yet this old-timey shopping area stands cheek-by-jowl with towering condominium complexes.

A five-minute walk from Tsukishima Station takes you to Tsukuda Park, adjacent to which is Sumidagawa Terrace, ideal for walking and jogging. Sumidagawa Terrace is justly famed for its night views and for the cherry trees that blossom in the spring.
