Tsukishima Area, Where Tokyo of the Good Old Days Meets Modern Skyline
■Property listings at Tsukishima/Kachidoki
Tsukishima is known as part of Tokyo’s Lower Town but it’s also part of the Bay Area, alongside Kachidoki and Toyosu. From Tsukishima Station, commuters can ride either the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line or the Toei Oedo Line. Public transit is convenient here: The Yurakucho line connects to Ginza Itchome Station in just 4 minutes, and to Tokyo Station, with transfer to the Yamanote Line, in 18 minutes.
Mention Tsukishima to a Tokyoite and what pops quickest to mind is Tsukishima Nishinaka-dori Shopping Street, affectionately known as Monja Street. The name derives from the 50 or so shops here selling monjayaki, a variation of okonomiyaki. Many people visit just to soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Monja Street is ringed by high-rise condominium towers yet retains its charm as an old-timey Lower Town shopping district.
A 5-minute stroll from Tsukishima Station takes you to Tsukuda Park. This spacious park, famed for its captivating night views, is a wonderful site for admiring the cherry blossoms in spring.
Tsukishima is expected to become more enjoyable to live with each passing year, as large-scale redevelopment projects proceed apace. The condominium towers planned for these projects are expected to add about 700 units for homes, shops, daycare centers and so on by about 2028.
